Ghostly leftovers....

Every  time I climb
into my bed
you’re there

A will o’ the wisp
haunting my nights
fleeting , ethereal

Ever again solid in that
pink mist just
before full waking

Your arms
wrapped snugly
spooning me
into a new day

Monstrous Flash Fiction

Trick or treat….

Hunger like a million crazed hamsters digging their sharp claws into the lining of my stomach. Days since I’ve eaten. Hiding, creeping along the hedgerows, I watch them trip gleefully from puddles of light to enveloping shadow. Just one. One wouldn’t hurt. I’d eat it standing up. Everybody knows that if you eat standing up it doesn’t count. Any minute now, I can feel it. One will drift a little off the path. With any luck it’ll be a plump one, but not the little whiny one. He’d be sour. I want one who smiles, one who says thank you at each door. One like the little sparkly fairy princess. She’d be sweet. She wouldn’t put up a fuss. But she’d be missed right away. A child like that would have watchful parents. I’ll have to choose another. But not the little whiny one. There’s still time. I can wait. They’ll be out for at least another hour.

They’re creepy and they’re kooky…..they’re altogether ooky….

I wrote this first part last week but didn't get a chance to post it:

I was driving along in a school zone a few days ago and saw something that freaked me out. Off to my right, out of the corner of my eye, I spied a nice normal looking house. The house sported a nicely manicured lawn and three pretty trees spaced equidistant near the sidewalk. But…and here's the creepy part…. someone had lashed a toddler sized snowsuit to each of the trees. A pink one, a blue one and a white one. I slowed my car to a crawl and looked really hard to see what was up with the snowsuits. After I ascertained that the snowsuits seemed to be filled with leaves [not babies] I felt a little bit better.

I'm going to drive back by the house a bit closer to Halloween to see if anything changes with the display. At this point I don't know if the creepy snowsuits were Halloween decorations in progress [they had no faces] or a warning to the other children to stay away.

All I do know is it was freak....y, and it's probably one of those houses that mothers should hold tightly to their children and pick up the pace to walk quickly past when they go out trick or treating this year.

I'm just wondering if I should call the cops….

~

Then yesterday I drove by the house again, stopped, crept up quietly and took a photo to share. Each snowsuit has a "face" now, and the display is definitely geared toward Halloween, but take a look at the photo and see if the face they added to the snowsuit is likely to make me feel any better about the owner of the house……

A Nightmare to Remember -- flash fiction

"It starts with doors. Door after door after door. The lights are on inside, but it's dark all around me on the outside. Sometimes there are noises coming out of the doors."

"What kind of noises?"

"I don't know…. spooky noises, the kind that make the hair on the back of your neck stand up."

Dr. Wilson waited while Allison gathered her thoughts and then prompted her gently.

"Just take your time Miss Crisp, try to tell it all as simply as you can and just as you remember it."

"In the newest dream I realized I wasn't alone. But I can't seem to see the person I'm with. All I can see of myself are my feet dangling in the air and I don't have any shoes on. My head feels funny. Like there's something on it weighing it down, making it heavier than usual. I'm holding something heavy in my right hand and I'm sleepy and I cry a little bit because I want to go home."

"Where do you think you are?"

"I don't know. There are a lot of people milling around in the dark nearby, and I call to them to take me home but no one does. We keep going to door after door. Scary things happen when the doors open and I'm supposed to do something but I don't understand what's required of me. So I cry more."

Allison lay on the couch and looked at the ceiling feeling mounting frustration engulfing her mind and spirit. She'd barely slept in months. The dream had started haunting her in October and now it was well after the new year. So little sleep had left her with hollow eyes and a Swiss cheese memory. The dream was spilling over into her waking life. Her coworkers had even started noticing her symptoms.

"I just feel that if I could make sense of the dream it would go away."

"Miss Crisp, this is just a theory mind you, but have you ever considered that the dream is a memory?"

"A memory?"

"Yes, maybe something that happened in your childhood. Something that traumatized you at the time."

"But why would I be carried from door to door..…and all those horrible things in the darkness……" Allison trailed off as flashes of images swirled in her brain…….smells, sights, sounds all clamored for attention……

"M&M's….the smell of m&m's that was what set me off in October. They've always made me feel ill and Julie had a big bowl on her desk the day before Halloween……"

Allison started laughing hysterically and then slid from the sofa to the floor in a slow motion crumple.

Dr. Wilson applied smelling salts and then briskly rubbed Allison's wrists.

He helped her back onto the sofa while sadly shaking his head ……the things that people put their children through just for a little free candy……
